NEA Task 4 : Research Into An Existing Bauer Film Magazine (Empire)
Research
Into An Existing Bauer Film Magazine (Empire)
The Empire magazine is itself a magazine focused on the ins
and outs of the film industry claiming to be the world’s most influential film
and entertainment brand. Empire uses its already known status to relish in what
they can achieve by having ‘unparalleled access’ to the industry and its
members for example, interviews with Tom Cruise to being on set with Quentin
Tarantino and shooting videos with Ryan Reynolds displaying their amount of access
and power they have to produce content that they and their audience want.
The Empire audience is that of film enthusiasts between 18 and
40, in work, in a relationship and university educated. The readership is three
quarters male and are seen to use film as an escape or an unobtainable reach to
other worlds or realities, Empire values this and sees their job as never being
more important looking to create and produce content to entertain their
audience whenever and wherever they are. Statistically speaking, 68% are of ABC
profile and 77% are in employment of the magazine’s readership.
What makes Empire so appealing to the audience is the extra
they receive from the magazine compared to other publishers and this is in no
short part down to their previously mentioned ‘unparalleled access’. For instance,
the magazine gives their audience exclusives about hot new drops coming to the industry
and Empire has some of the biggest firsts in the entertainment world also,
getting on set with the stars up close to get every detail of production as
Empire set visits claim to be like no other. Empire also has A list access like
no other but really what makes the magazine connect with the audience is that
the team has authority to speak on the topic and would likely purchase the
magazine themselves if they had not made the product.
The readership of Empire differs however from that of my target
audience. This is due to the fact that Empire has a broader target audience
which they can target with a wide range of media with their stupendously larger
budget and access but, the audience for my magazine is 16-25 year olds
therefore still adult but not as life experienced as Empires 40 year olds. That
being said I am still targeting a middle and upmarket media literate audience which is
comparative to Empire’s university educated audience therefore approach to
audience maybe similar in that sense.
